Teaming Up to Spread the Word About Plastic

SPI and the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) have joined forces to create a better understanding of the U.S. plastics industry among state and local workforce boards. The SPI/NAWB alliance will educate the workforce boards about the size, scope and impact of the plastics industry, which employs more than 1.5 million workers throughout the U.S., and will work closely with the boards to identify plastics companies in need of worker training. Another goal of the alliance is to aid those companies with accessing federal funding for incumbent worker training programs. The alliance will be officially launched at NPE 2003, June 24, 2003 in Chicago, when executive directors and chairs from 89 workforce boards in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio will meet with SPI and plastics company representatives at the nation's largest plastics trade show. For more information about the alliance or event at NPE contact Barbara Darby, (864) 239-2939; e-mail bdarby@socplas.org.

SPI SHIFTS PLASTICS USA SHOW CYCLE

SPI SHIFTS PLASTICS USA CYCLE TO ENHANCE CONVENIENCE FOR SHOW PARTICIPANTS AND TO BENEFIT FROM NEW MCCORMICK PLACE VENUE Plastics USA 2008 Is to Take Place March 4 to 6 in New West Building of McCormick Place and Be Held Simultaneously with the NPE 2009 Drawing for Exhibit Space WASHINGTON, DC, USA, July 28, 2005: The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) has scheduled its next Plastics USA trade show six months later than originally planned to simplify scheduling for participants and to take advantage of an opportunity to stage the event in a brand-new, innovative facility at Chicago’s McCormick Place, it was announced today by SPI. In another first, SPI will hold its NPE 2009 Drawing for Exhibit Space during Plastics USA. Plastics USA 2008 will take place March 4 to 6, 2008, in McCormick Place West, which is under construction and scheduled to open at the start of that year. Until now, SPI has held the triennial Plastics USA show in the year following its giant international plastics exposition, NPE, and in McCormick Place East (Lakeside Center). With the next NPE due to take place in June of 2006, Plastics USA normally would have been scheduled for September of 2007, a month prior to the K-2007 show. “We are excited about sponsoring the first manufacturing trade show to take place in McCormick West because this big new facility promises logistical advantages and attractive amenities for exhibitors and visitors,” said William R. Carteaux, SPI president. “In addition, McCormick West’s new ballroom will provide an outstanding venue for our triennial NPE Drawing for Exhibit Space.” Change of Dates Makes Show Participation Easy and Provides Innovative Venue Like NPE, the triennial K show in Germany is a world-scale plastics exposition. Plastics USA traditionally has taken place only weeks prior to that show. “The new dates place Plastics USA in a season when participants will be freer from conflicts with other industry events,” said Carteaux, “and the co-location of the show with the NPE 2009 space drawing will enable those in charge of exhibiting-company trade show participation to carry out two important responsibilities at the same time. In addition, Drawing participants who do not exhibit at Plastics USA 2008 will have the opportunity of networking with companies at the show.” In the past, many companies exhibiting at Plastics USA have also done so at NPE. The Drawing for selecting NPE space typically attracts trade show managers from over 700 exhibiting companies. While McCormick Place is already the largest U.S. exhibition center, the five-level McCormick Place West building will add 470,000 sq. ft. (43,700 sq.m) of exhibition space, increasing the total at the complex by more than 20%, according to Chicago’s Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA). The new facility will also have 250,000 sq.ft. (23,200 sq.m) of meeting space in close proximity to the exhibit floor. The adjacent 100,000 sq.ft. [9,300 sq.m] ballroom will be the city’s largest. Logistical features cited for the facility by the MPEA include dedicated roadways for freight, with direct connection to truck marshalling; a transportation center accommodating front-door arrival of up to 16 buses simultaneously, along with taxis; a parking garage within the building; a large indoor area for crate storage; and direct access from the show floor to the exhibitor service center. Amenities will include an 8,000-sq.ft. (750 sq.m) rooftop garden terrace with capacity for 800 people, extensive dining and retail areas, and a central concourse called “Main Street America.” Information on McCormick Place West is available at www.mccormickplace.com. ### PLASTICS USA 2008, North America’s Plastics Marketplace, will take place March 4-6, 2008, in the new West Building at McCormick Place in Chicago. The triennial event is sponsored by The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI), which also produces NPE, The International Plastics Showcase. More than 400 exhibiting companies will occupy 80,000 sq.ft. (7,450 sq.m) of net exhibit space at Plastics USA 2008 and attract more than 15,000 visitors, primarily from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as Central and South America. Founded in 1937, THE SOCIETY OF THE PLASTICS INDUSTRY, INC. is the trade association representing one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States. SPI’s members represent the entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment manufacturers, and raw material suppliers. The U.S. plastics industry employs 1.4 million workers and provides more than $310-billion in annual shipments. For more information visit SPI on the Web at www.plasticsindustry.org. NPE 2003 Offers "Unmatched Opportunity" for Education

In addition to the variety of information and insight that abound on the trade show floor at NPE 2003, attendees will also find a wealth of educational programs focused on topics such as processing innovations, new materials, emerging design technologies, market trends, management issues, global trade, professional training and more. Among the programs, the NPE 2003 Conference offers a series of 68 presentations by industry experts, coordinated by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and presented free of charge to registered attendees. Also planned during NPE week are a number of SPI workshops and training courses, sponsored by the association's Occupational Health and Enviornmental Issues Committee (OHEIC) and Energy Task Force. SPI's Food, Drug and Cosmetic Packaging Materials Committee (FDCPMC) will present an international symposium on global packaging regulations in conjunction with its annual spring meeting, and a special breakfast briefing of the SPI Global Business Council will address the impact of U.S.-China trade relations on the international plastics industry. Additionally, a series of 34 intensive one- and two-day, paid courses are available as part of the SPE Seminars Series. Epcot Update

SPI representatives met on March 17 with a team of Disney "Imagineers" to launch the concept phase of the planned plastics showcase at the Innoventions pavilion at Epcot® in Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando. Convening with the show producer, story writer, art director and others, SPI laid out the messages it wished conveyed in the exhibit and began brainstorming on ways to get key points across. As a next step, SPI and showcase anchors GE Plastics and DuPont will work with Disney to schedule a series of informational visits for the creative team. The SPI plastics showcase is planned to open in January 2004. For more information, contact Bonnie Merrill Limbach, (202) 974-5210; e-mail blimbach@socplas.org.
